Berlin Overtakes London as Startup Heatmap’s Top European Location

The German capital is number one in Startup Heatmap’s annual survey of Europe’s best cities for fledgling companies.
Berlin did particularly well among start-up founders from 29 different countries, boosting its score by five percent over 2019. That took Germany’s largest city up to an overall score of 39 percent, compared with 36 percent for London. Startup Heatmap speculates that the change may be partially down to the UK’s exit from the European Union.
Amsterdam and Barcelona were third and fourth with 17 percent, while Munich came in a strong fifth with 10%, just ahead of Lisbon and Paris. Other German cities in the top 50 were Cologne (number 30), Hamburg (37) and Stuttgart (38).
Categories asked about in the survey included ecosystem dynamics, industry connections, female entrepreneurs, developer availability, value for money and ease of doing business.
