First mentioned in writing back in the year 794, “Franconofurt” evolved into a central trade centre and exhibition venue with a flourishing stock exchange. Today, Frankfurt is one of Europe’s leading business centres – not only for trading, but also for research, production and rating companies.

• With the European Central Bank, the German Bundesbank and some 200 banks and 8,400 financial service providers in the region, Frankfurt is Europe’s financial centre. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is one of the largest trading platforms in the world.
• TechQuartier, a new fintech hub set up on the initiative of the City of Frankfurt and Goethe University, encourages financial technology start-ups to settle in Frankfurt with a view to networking and developing together.
• The insurance sector is well represented with the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and 160 insurance companies.

• The entire chemical and pharmaceutical value chain is covered in the Rhine-Main region, including all service and infrastructure providers.
• It is here that key global players from the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors are based. Industriepark Höchst is home to more than 90 companies with 22,000 employees.
• ACHEMA, the international flagship event for the chemical engineering and process industries, is held on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds.

Keeping things moving: Logistics and transportation

• International air, road and rail transport and inland water transport are connected through state-of-the-art interfaces in the Rhine-Main region.
• Frankfurt Airport is one of the top ten international freight airports. For example, 24,000 tons of fresh fish are handled here every year – more than in the port of Hamburg.
• The logistics and transport services sector is responsible for most jobs in the region.
• Companies and research centres like the House of Logistics & Mobility show the way forward.

Europe’s Silicon Valley: Information and communication technology

• Over 40 percent of sales revenue attributable to the 100 highest-grossing software companies in Europe is generated in or around Frankfurt.
• All leading telephone companies, dynamic start-ups and renowned institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology are based in the Rhine-Main region.
• Around 85 percent of German and 35 percent of European internet traffic runs via Frankfurt with its DE-CIX internet exchange, the world’s largest in terms of data throughput.

• It is only a 15-minute drive from Frankfurt International Airport to the city centre and the exhibition grounds.
• Messe Frankfurt is very clearly signposted in and around Frankfurt. An integrated traffic management system is in place to guide traffic on many access roads to Messe Frankfurt locations.
• The city’s enviable suburban rail and underground network and its buses and trams provide ideal transport connections within the city.
