5 of the best districts to visit in Frankfurt

Sachsenhausen
Sachsenhausen is known as the old heart of Frankfurt. Its cobbled streets and small squares give the area plenty of character, and it has a bohemian feel. Sachsenhausen is famous for apple wine and it has a high concentration of bars that are ideal for sampling the beverage. The traditional bars and cider houses offer a great way of experiencing Frankfurt’s nightlife yet for those wanting to take in some top shopping, the main retail street Schweizer Strasse offers an eclectic mix of boutiques that are perfect for picking up souvenirs to take home.

Bornheim
Located north east of the city centre, Bornheim is the Frankfurt’s main shopping district. Berger Strasse is the chief shopping thoroughfare, offering a cobblestone stretch of more than two kilometres lined with cafés and restaurants. The street holds a farmers’ market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and here you’ll find a great mix of hot and cold food, ideal for taking away for lunch or purchasing as edible souvenirs. After exploring the range of shops head to Bethmannpark with its beautiful Chinese garden.

Innenstadt
Set in the central district of Frankfurt, the Innenstadt area has become the heart of Frankfurt’s shopping scene and is home to Zeil, the most famous shopping street in the city. Here you’ll find an impressive selection of top international brands, high street chains and small boutiques. It is ideal for those on varying budgets. Innenstadt is the setting for MyZeil shopping centre as well as several of the city’s most notable stores, including Galeria Kaufhof.

Westend
Westend is an affluent, quiet neighbourhood. It is a great place to visit if you are wanting respite from the bustle of the centre. In particular, Palmengarten is a wonderful oasis, and here visitors can explore 22 hectares of green space. The botanical garden is particularly renowned for its exhibitions and festive events. Just opposite is Grüneburgpark, another expansive green space. It offers lawns, winding paths and impressive trees. Take a picnic, take part in a yoga session here or simply stroll through the beautiful area. Note, though, that as one of the more upscale districts of Frankfurt, Westend tends to be more expensive than other parts of the city, especially the restaurants and cafés here.

Nordend
Nordend has become increasingly popular with young professionals thanks its chic restaurants, wine bars, organic supermarkets and artisan boutiques. Head to Glauburgstrasse to discover some of the best. As well as an eclectic mix of independent shops, the area is known for its elegant architecture, with beautiful tree-lined avenues backed by stunning old mansions. It also offers Günthersburgpark, a striking space that was once the private estate of the Rothschild family. With its extensive lawns, fountains and activities throughout the year, the park is now a top attraction.
